Here is a scary sounding lick for you! It's basically an E Blues scale, but what we have done here is really emphasised the flat 5 (Bb) note. In fact, we have pretty much replaced the regular 5, which has given us sort of a creepy diminished tone through this lick.
The sequence found in this lick in kind of interesting. You start first on the root (E) and follow up three notes, then switch to the minor third (G) and go up four notes, then switch to the flat five (Bb) and go up up another four notes to its highest point in the lick. So by beginning each sequence on the root, minor third and flat five, we basically created a diminished underline to this otherwise happy blues scale. The last three notes bring us back to reality and ends happily on the octave.
As with some other licks of this type where you are reaching to a string behind to start a sequence, try reaching behind with and upstroke pick. You will find it to be a bit faster to work through this lick by reaching that way. Though I will always encourage you to alternate your pick strokes whenever possible.
